Wells
Print & Digital Services has a long history of producing
quality products and services by implementing the latest available
technology.
In 1922,
Will Wells and Hugo Schumacher came together and formed
Quality Printer, located at 107 South Fairchild Street in
Madison, Wisconsin. Their equipment list included a single
hand-fed Craftsman press. After five years Hugo left the
company, and it was renamed and incorporated as Wells
Printing Company, Inc.
In 1936,
Wells Printing moved to a new facility, located at 121 West
Main Street. Along with the move came new equipment,
including a Linotype typesetter and Madison's first Heidelberg press.
In 1942,
Will Wells retired and turned the business over to his son
Rufus Wells. Rufus had grown up working in printing with his
dad and had a good understanding of what it took to be
successful in the printing business. Rufus proceeded to
build Wells Printing into one of southern Wisconsin's
leading printing companies.
In 1966,
Rufus Wells retired and sold the business to long-time
employee Carl Schorr and his business partner Dick Massey.
With new ownership and new management Wells entered the new
age of printing.
In 1969,
an investment of over a million dollars moved Wells away
from letterpress printing technology and into offset
printing technology. The purchases of a new Hiedelberg offset
press, a complete camera & darkroom department and a new
automated booklet binder kept Wells among the leading printing
companies in southern Wisconsin.
In 1979,
Wells went through another change ownership. Carl Schorr's
wife Janet and his son Thomas bought out Dick Massey. Once
again Wells returned to a family owned and operated printing
shop.
In 1985,
Wells moved its operation from its home of 50 years on Main
Street to a new facility at 3121 Watford Way. The move gave
Wells a new, clean building with 3 times the floor space,
loading docks, air conditioning, free parking and plenty of
room to grow.
